The Bump

Has this happened to you?  You go a piercing shop and your heart starts to beat very fast.  The anxiety starts to get to you, but you go through with it anyways.  The piercer does a wonderful job and you can't wait to show off your nose piercing to your friends.  But then you wake up one day and there's an ugly red bump next to the hole where the jewelry is.  How did it happen?  It seemed to be healing so well!  Now your piercing is only noticeable because of the dreaded bump.  You go online and search for ways to make this stubborn bump go away.  Every website either tells you to do sea salt soaks or to use tea tree oil.  They all say that their method worked right away, but when you try the sea salt soaks, you just end up drowning yourself in the solution or you try the tea tree oil and find that your nose just gets irritated.

Has this ever happened to you?  If it has, I am here to tell you that I've found a method that works and does not involve messy sea salt soaks or abrasive, irritating tea tree oil.  I got this bump about three weeks after I got my piercing.  It just showed up one day and I wasn't sure why.  I'd had my nose pierced before and it had happened as a result of snagging it on a shirt and bumping it multiple times by accident.  The bump kept growing the first time to the point where the jewelry was barely visible.  I took out the jewelry and the bump disappeared, but when I got my nose pierced a second time it happened again!  I tried everything from sea salt soaks, tea tree oil, vitamin E oil, emu oil, hydrocortisone, and my regular H2Ocean.  When I did the sea salt soaks I put some sea salt in a bowl and filled it with water, but soaking my nose in the solution was a very messy and not very helpful solution.  I read a blog about tea tree oil and began using it.  I used it for three weeks and while it reduced the size of my bump, my nostril turned bright red and became very sensitive and irritated.  Vitamin E oil didn't do much, other than form a nasty layer of skin that was a very odd yellowish color.  Emu oil and hydrocortisone did nothing for my bump other than take away some of the discomfort.

I was about to give up when I read another blog that suggested using aspirin.  I immediately went to the store (with my ugly bright red bump) and bought a bottle of NON-COATED Aspirin.  I put it in a glass with a little bit of water so that it turned into a paste and then put it on my bump before I went to sleep.  Mind you, the bump was also quite irritated and bleeding before I put on the paste.  The next day I woke up, sprayed away the paste with H2Ocean and saw that the bump had turned into a scab, but it was not nearly as swollen as it was.  After a few more days of applying the aspirin, I jumped in the shower and when I got out, the scab had softened (because of the steam and water) and peeled away, revealing nice, bump-free, smooth skin underneath.  I still apply the paste at night because occasionally I get a tiny tiny bit of swelling, but the aspirin paste reduces the bump, takes away the redness, and eventually makes the bump disappear.  I could not be happier about my piercing, so to those of you who have been fighting tooth and nail to keep your piercing, don't give up!  This pain-free method works very well because the aspirin absorbs through your skin and allows drainage and soothes irritation.  This method is very effective, easy, practical, and does not involve abrasive chemicals or difficult sea salt soaks.  Nose piercing bumps are very common because cartilage has no blood vessels, which limits its ability to repair itself.  The bump itself is called hypotrophic scarring and usually occurs after you either snag the jewelry on something, bump it, play with it, or if you over-clean it.  The aspirin is an anti-inflammatory, so it "calms down" the irritation and allows it to heal without complications.

If this sounds familiar to you, you are not alone!  Most people who get nose piercings will get this bump and lots of people who do not have piercings do not have them because they got their noses pierced and took out the jewelry after they got the bump.  If you love your piercing and want to get your money's worth, try the aspirin paste.  It's affordable, soothing, and will leave you with the beautiful piercing you had to begin with.

**Note this bump appeared twice on my nose and the first time I used this method my piercing was so irritated that it was practically bleeding.  With that being said, the Aspirin paste probably worked best because it penetrated the skin so quickly, but I do not recommend puncturing the skin.  When it occurred the second time, it took about a month of Aspirin paste (overnight) and sea salt soaks to make it go away completely.

    1. Doing it 2-3 times a day AND at night is probably irritating it, and most likely only making the piercing more irritated than it was to start with. I would suggest cutting down to only applying at night, and see what happens from there

  2. I like to mix the aspirin with sea salt and put it on my nose at night. Also, I recommend doing sea salt soaks regularly so that the tissue can soften a little and the skin won't be an impenetrable barrier. After I shower I usually do a soak just to keep it calm and to prevent any more bumps from forming. I continued to get bumps and it's been a while. I've had my nose pierced for nearly two years and I'll tell you right now that these bumps, if you get one, you'll probably get another at some point, so it's good to keep up the maintenance.

At night I also do a soak. I change my jewelry pretty frequently but I recommend finding a flat stud of a hoop. These don't snag as easily and they don't put as much pressure on the piercing, allowing it to breathe and to be healthy and clean. This piercing, to be honest, is a pain in the ass but it can be managed. I try not to touch it at all and to keep doing sea salt soaks and using the aspirin. If you are feeling desperate you can also take aspirin or hair skin & nails vitamins, as the Advil will reduce inflammation and the vitamins keep your skin healthy.

I have been having a few issues since it is summer and therefore very hot and humid, which is no bueno for a piercing that has a tendency to become inflamed. It gets clogged with sweat and whatnot, so keep it clean. I had a bump but I did sea salt soaks and used the aspirin for a week and by the second week it was not even noticeable. It does work, you just have to stick to it. If you think it's infected, don't use aspirin, as it seems to only irritate it more to have chemicals and compounds clogging it up. Good luck!

    1. This is exactly what happened to me. I accidentally pulled on my piercing while putting on a shirt. It developed a red bump the next day. It's been 2 months and I can still see the bump, though not nearly as big as it was before. Did the aspirin paste help?

  4. For me, I think I got my little red bump from applying make up and not taking it off. It doesn't hurt at all but I hope to god it doesn't enhance. this is my 4th piercing.

  5. Also, using tea tree oil, if the aspirin doesn't work, tends to do the job if you use it sparingly. I put a dab on my bump at night over the summer (every other night) and it tends to make the skin sort of irritated, but if you get desperate you can use it. It will make the skin turn flaky and yellowish but it will penetrate the bump and make it look like a popped blood vessel. it will, however, scab over and go away if you leave the skin alone. i advise using the oil at night and then soaking the piercing in sea salt water in the morning to soften it up and heal.

  7. I got my nose pierced two weeks ago and I have a bump now too. Granted, the stud fell out a lot and I put a ring in because I got sick of the stud falling out every morning. I'm so scared it'll be permanent. Thanks for sharing about the aspirin! It's on my nose now and I'll got to the store and get some sea salt later this week. In a pinch, instead of using water to make the aspirin paste, could I use H2Ocean? It has salt in it. Thanks again!

  8. I had the dreaded bump as well and it just kept getting worse. I have been using a combination of 1) Sea salt soaks 2x/daily 2) Aspirin paste overnight and 3) A product called 'New Skin, Scar Therapy' overnight. I have noticed a SIGNIFICANT difference. It is shrinking before my eyes. I thought I would never get rid of that annoying bump but this seems to be working. It's been a week and a half in. Try it!

  11. I got my nose pierced about 8 months ago & for the first 2 months I barely had a bump but then it went away. Then out of no where I got a bump that wouldn't go away then just days after I got the bump it got bigger & somehow grew over the piercing. It was horrific. After that happened the bump went down but still stayed there. It's been 6 months mow & I've been trying the sea salt soak but it doesn't really seem to work for me. People have suggested to see a doctor. I will try this aspirin paste hopefully it works. Thanks for this amazing blog post I really just want a cute nose piercing!

  16. Hi, I also have a bump and want to try the uncoated aspirin to get rid of it, but I can't seem to find it anywhere. I've tried smiths, Walgreens, and CVS. Where did you find yours? Would thinly coated aspirin work too?

    ReplyDelete
  17. Using the paste in conjunction with sea salt soaks helps too. The aspirin paste will reduce the swelling and may make it scab a little bit but the sea salt soak helps soften the tissue. I find that using a combination of these methods, including a tiny but of TTO, helps more. At one point I was using a lot of TTO and my nose got red and raw. Almost glossy looking. Then I laid off the oil and did 3 soaks a day with sea salt-aspirin paste at night while I slept and it healed. Note: only use uncoated aspirin!

This all happened for me a couple years ago and I haven't had any issues since! One time it got irritated from swimming and got a little white pimple like bump and I did the salt soak twice and it went away. Now I also wear a hoop so it gets more air and is more comfortable and less likely to snag.

Hope this helps and good luck to everyone!

  25. Hello everybody! I'm also dealing with a bump on my nose ring and tried the sea salt soaks and the overnight aspirin paste for nearly a week now. I couldn't notice any reduction of the bump unless reduced redness around the bump area. How long did it take to heal your bumps? Also I'd really love to know how to use the tea tree oil in combination with the sss and the aspirin paste? Just combine it in the paste? Thank you so much for sharing! :)

    1. Combining the TTO with aspirin paste won't work because the oil and paste won't mix. Use the TTO once and then do the sea salt soaks and aspirin paste at night. Do frequent sea salt soaks to cleanse it.

    2. Thanks so much for your reply. I'm doing the sss three times daily. So you would say applying the TTO in the afternoon (for example) and the aspirin paste over night? 1. Aspirin paste is the paste you get when you take an uncoated aspirin pill (drugstore brand is fine) and add a few drops of water to it. It starts to disintegrate but will form a paste that you can put on your piercing.

I know everywhere it says that alcohol on your nose piercing is bad but honestly that is what worked for me. It was my last resort but it should've been my first. I cleaned my piercing with alcohol and the bump was gone the next morning. Bash me if you want but please at least try it once if you haven't.

She also told me to continue with the sea salt soaks 3 times a day (I use H2Ocean from hot topic). Hope this helps some of you and I hope the aspirin helps me too. :) *fingers crossed*

  35. Hi I pierced my nose about a month ago and recently developed the bump you speak of. It seems like some days it is doing well with the sea salt soaks then others it doesn't seem to be helping. Is aspirin the only pill u can make into a paste to soothe it? Or is there any other you can use?

    ReplyDelete
  36. Hi can u use paracetamol instead if aspirin for paste?

    ReplyDelete
  37. ^I'm not entirely sure, as I've never used it and I'm no doctor. I found that using the uncoated aspirin paste is extremely helpful when a tiny tiny amount of sea salt is added to it. Additionally, it helps when you use a sea salt water soak to rinse off the paste. These two methods worked best in conjunction for me.

For other inquirers who have bumps, try your methods and post back if something else works! This is only one method and the one that worked for me. I've had my piercing for six years now and it hasn't become inflamed or infected in four years. I used so many methods but the Aspirin paste worked the fastest for me and worked even better with sea salt soaks. It got irritated once about four and a half years ago when i went swimming but a quick dab of the paste and a soak about 15 minutes later cleared it all up. I personally did not want to use alcohol because my skin is so sensitive and when I use abrasive chemicals like alcohol or tea tree oil, it irritates the tissue and the irritation goes DEEP into the cartilage. That then causes more itching, peeling, redness, and irritation to the bump, which did not fix it for me.

  38. Update: I tried everything and nothing worked so I went to a new piercer. He told me i needed to switch out my ring for a stud for the meantime while it healed and clean it morning and night with regular soap while in showers or while washing my face (i use dove). He also said to put water in the freezer and pour it on the piercing before bed for a minute or so. Also, after cleaning the piercing to add a bit of Emu oil in the morning and at night. He gave me a bit for free to try. This actually did the trick. It worked perfectly!!! He said to stop using sea salt soaked because it was only irritating my nose. He was right. I was so grateful!! It took just a week for me. I hope this helps you. I had that ugly bump for 2-3 months I believe. It was hell and I was always embarrassed to go out. Let me know if you try it and if it worked for you. :)

  41. Hey I got a bump 5 days after my nose piercing thanks to my kid falling on my face :0 I tried an antibacterial ointment and turmeric and the bump oozed white gunk in a few days. But it didn't go away. Just got bigger. I tried salt soaks but that just made it redder and shinier!
Then I read this blog and immediately started applying the aspirin paste. For a couple of days the bump seemed to be getting smaller but then it started hurting and got bigger again. Today, about 6 days after I started the aspirin paste, the bump oozed a lot of blood. Just a dot of white goop and a lot of blood. And the colour of the bump went to purple. I'm worried out of my mind now :( should I apply aspirin tonight? Or get stuck with an ugly bump on my nose!

It started to form a scab on only one part of the bump and now the scab is gone and no change to the size of the bump at all, I wash with soap in the morning and do a sea salt soak at night then put on the paste. Any advice? Should I keep at this routine and see if anything changes? Frusterated because if it does seem like the bump is shrinking, that will only last a day or so and then return to normal size/ redness. Also have had my nose pierced for almost 3 months

    1. I used the Aspirin and sea salt soak routine for months just to be sure it worked. 3 months is a very short time to have a piercing for, especially for a cartilage piercing, let alone one that gets knocked around a bit. I was dealing with the bump several months into the healing process and only after consistently caring for it did it actually work.

  47. I got my nose pierced a little over a month ago. It was fine for the first week and a half, then I started to get the bump. It turned into a zit. On the advice of my piercer, I used a sterilized needle (sterilized with rubbing alcohol) to drain it when it would fill up, then use a hot compress of 1 c. purified/filtered water and 1/4 tsp. pink Himalayan sea salt. After two days of this, the zit went away, but left the little red bump.

Another week went by with me doing hot salt water compresses 3x/day, with nothing much happening. Then all of a sudden the side of my face where the piercing is got hot and tight. My throat gland on that side got very sore (all in the span of about an hour). I went to the walk-in and was told I had an abscess inside my nose, and was prescribed antibiotic pills and antibiotic topical cream. That was 3 days ago. I have been taking my antibiotics as prescribed, 1 pill 4x/day and putting the topical on 4x/day. I felt better but the bump was still there. This morning I decided to try something new that I should have been doing all along: I was EXTREMELY gentle doing my sea salt soak and cleaning. I barely touched the piercing at all, taking great care not to turn it accidentally or on purpose, and being careful with the q-tip inside my nose as I applied my topical. Now, over the course of the last 12 hours, the bump has all but disappeared!

So you see, you can come back from the dreaded bump, even back from a terrible infection that threatens to land you in the hospital for surgical drainage, and not only recover but have the bump go away! Pretty much the worst thing that can happen to a person getting a nose piercing happened to me, and my nose is pretty well back to normal and looking fab. So, long story short, here is what I have learned:

    1. BE GENTLE! Like, REALLY gentle. Hardly touch it at all when you're cleaning it. Try hard not to twist it, spin it, or move the post in and out.

    2. Use a strong paper towel for the soak and cleaning. Anything else, including q-tips, can leave behind little fibres that can cause an infection. (Note: I do use q-tips to apply the topical antibiotic cream to the inside of my nose, but I coat the tip very thoroughly with the cream, which is quite thick, before application to ensure no fibres will stick).

    3. Clean it only twice a day, after you've washed your face. Wash face, do sea salt soak, clean GENTLY, and dry completely. Use a hairdryer on gentle cool setting for best gentle drying. Cleaning or soaking more than this will make the bump hang around because of the extra moving around of the jewelry.

    4. Change your pillowcase every other night.

    5. Drink plenty of lemon water and green tea. Take calcium, magnesium, and vitamin c to boost your immune system and promote healing.

    6. Get a little bit of sun (not too much!! Don't get burned!)

I hope this helps you. I searched high and low on the internet for a definitive answer to that burning question, 'will the bump go away?' and I can tell you that it can!!

    2. I recommend using uncoated only. The coating on Aspirin gives it flavor so it's easier to take orally, so I imagine whatever they use for flavoring isn't ideal for topical use and must have some effect on the skin. I just use the drugstore brand of uncoated Aspirin.

    1. Stick with Aspirin! I haven't tried Tylenol, so I can't say for sure if it'll have the same effect.

    2. Its best to stick with Aspirin. Tylenol and ibuprofen will do nothing for you besides probably irritate your piercing. Aspirin is specifically ment for inflammation while ibuprofen and Tylenol are just pain relievers. If your piercing is painful then it might be a good idea to take some Tylenol or ibuprofen while using the aspirin paste:)

  53. I had a flesh colored bump. Had been using sea salt soaks twice a day and tea tree oil twice a day. It would get crusty and start looking better but then would return. I heard about the aspirin paste. Tried it overnight the bump seemed smaller the next day. Put it on again the next night. The second morning my bump is now red, like blood under the skin. Seemed bigger and kind of sticky to the touch. After I rinsed it well in the shower and cleaned it with a sea salt soak I've left it alone. Seems less red and smaller. Was the aspirin paste a wrong chose for me? What do I do next?

    1. an update.....I went to see my piercer this afternoon. He changed out my jewelry. I had a surgical steel ring and I changed to titanium. Also bought the sterilized wound care aftercare. What I had purchased in the store was not sterilized saline. It has only been an hour and it feels so much better! The bump is less red and smaller already too!

    2. I went into a piercing shop to remove my stainless steel ring for a titanium stud which is what I had but they said to leave it alone and just do the sea salt and emu oil. Gonna just do as they say for awhile. I like the hoop too!
Will see I might just go back to a stud.

  55. If the bumps seems to not go away with anything it’s best to go to a dermotologist and they take care of it I went to one cause my bump wouldn’t go away with anything and it they removed it

  57. Before you do anything else go see a good piercer. I went to a licensed shop where all they do is sell piercings, not a half tattoo parlor place and they told me what to do and even gave me a little bit of emu oil to help and it cleared me up within 2 weeks. Mind you my bump was on top and big. So go try them first before trying anything else. They deal with this all of the time. They’re the experts.

  58. Hi
I’m 51 and had my nose pierced June 12 2015. Never had a problem until a month ago I got a full hoop. I really always wanted one so I did it. Had no problem and I told the girl who changed it how long I had my piercing for and explained I liked to pick my nose.
She never told me not to. She should have explained how I could get a bump even though I’ve had my piercing a long time. Had I known I would have kept my stud.
I went to another piercing place and they didn’t want to change it out.
They don’t think it has anything to do with the titanium stud and switching to stainless steal hoop.
They said to leave it in and do the salt soak every night and emu oil on the hole.
I’m mad because I love my piercing! So bummed. Not giving up.

  59. I had a similar thing happen to me. It didn’t go away until I changed to the stud and kept doing the emu oil. Good luck. 👍
